Outlaws End Season with Bang

Sunday, 19 July 2009 21:12 | 0 comments

Ogden closed out the 2009 season last night, dismantling Bakersfield Brigade 6 to 0. The Brigade, having lost 3 - 0 at BYU on Friday night, would have a tough hill to climb if they expected a win against the Outlaws. Bakersfield were short handed and faced near 100-degree heat and an Outlaw side who would accept nothing short of a victory. Ogden had suffered a set back the previous night at the hands of Lancaster - needless to say, they were pumped up to get back on the pitch.

This was a match that saw the Outlaws dominate from the opening kick until the final whistle. Pressure was the name of the game for Ogden. SungHyun Kim would find himself open on the left side throughout the first half and he wreaked havoc on the Brigade back line.

However, it was Andy Cornia who tallied the first Outlaw goal in the 18th minute. Careless ball control by a Bakersfield defender allowed Cornia to sneak in and steal the ball and hit net for the 1 - 0 lead.

Outlaws Get Bit by Lancaster

The Outlaws came into the match against Lancaster brimming with confidence after playing their best soccer of the year with two wins last weekend. With the 2009 season wrapping up this weekend, Ogden hoped to build on that confidence and close out the season with two wins.

Ogden actually looked pretty good to start the match, maintaining possession and getting quality looks at the goal. But it was Lancaster who struck first in the 11th minute. Ogden goalkeeper, Sam Hayden came out of his box to clear a ball but pressure from Rattler Mauricio Harrie forced a mistake and knocked the ball into an open net.

Ogden would level the score in the 27th minute when Andy Cornia hit a fantastic strike from the left side and beat the Rattler goalkeeper at the near post. Midfielder SungHyun Kim assisted on the goal.

A soft foul by defender Mike Hickman Jr. led to another Lancaster goal. The free kick was taken by Christian Hernandez just outside the box. Ogden's 5-man wall wasn't enough as Hernandez sent a laser around the wall and into the net. Lancaster would take the 2 - 1 lead into half.

Lancaster and Bakersfield

Outlaws play their final two matches of the season when they host Lancaster Rattlers on Friday, July 17th, and Bakersfield Brigade on Saturday, July 18th.  Ogden lost a close 4 - 3 contest at Lancaster three weeks ago. This will be the first and only meeting against the Brigade.

Ogden sits five points behind Lancaster and one point ahead of Bakersfield. Two wins this weekend will give the Outlaws 16 points. If the Outlaws get some help from BYU, they could vault themselves into 8th place. It is all talk right now, because there is lots of soccer to be played. If they continue to play the way they have the last two matches, they could end the season on a winning note.

Hope to see you at Bonneville High School. Both matches kick off at 6:00 PM. If you can't make it to the match, get live match updates here or on Twitter.

Outlaws put out Fuego

Sunday, 12 July 2009 14:33 | 0 comments

The Outlaws were a little short-handed Saturday night as they hosted California side, Fresno Fuego. But, it didn't seem to matter. The previous night, Ogden played their best soccer of the 2009 season when they secured a 1 - 0 victory over Orange County. It was another great performance on Saturday by the Outlaws as a team, with some individual exceptional performances.

The Outlaws attacked from the opening whistle catching Fresno a little bit on their heels. The first wave was turned back, but in the 4th minute midfielder, Joe Hickman played a superb ball between two Fuego defenders, finding fellow Outlaw Sunghyun Kim. Kim's one touch left-footed strike beat the diving Fuego goalkeeper. Outlaws up 1 - 0.

Minutes later, Kim nearly doubled the score. Receiving a rebound after an Outlaw corner, Kim struck a volley that carromed off the cross-bar. In the ensuing minutes, Outlaw shots came in bunches, but Ogden could not convert another.

Fresno continued to plug away, getting some opportunities to equalize but their attempts were poorly taken or defended well by the Outlaw back line. In the 35th minute, during one of the Fuego attacks, it appeared the Outlaws would clear the ball once again. However, Taylor Bowlin's header dropped to the feet of an unmarked Fuego attacker. Adrian Alvarado lined up and sent an unsavable rocket into the back of the net. His goal would send both sides into the half tied up at one.

Ogden took control in the second half and would never let up. In the 58th minute the Outlaws would get the winning goal. Outlaw defender, Taylor Bowlin, made up for his mistake in the first half. Using his speed, Bowlin began the Outlaw counter by swiftly dribbling the ball down the sideline deep into Fuego territory. Bowlin played a ball inside to forward Andy Cornia, who played a square ball to onrushing Sunghyun Kim. Kim's low shot would put the Outlaws on top 2 - 1.

Second half substitute, Adrian Saldana, nearly got a goal of his own in the waning moments of the match to ice the game. His sliding redirection of a Kim cross would clang off the cross bar.

"The guys are coming together...a little too late, but it's good to see them moving the ball and attacking the goal," said Coach Hickman. "Early on in the season we were in our own half for most of the game defending. Now were aren't relying on one player up top to score for us. We have multiple guys joining the attack...including our defenders."

With this new found confidence, Ogden looks to close out the season on a positive note next weekend with a pair of matches against Lancaster Rattlers on Friday night and Bakersfield Brigade on Saturday night. Both matches will kick off at 6:00 PM.

Outlaws get win over Bluestar

With the Ogden Outlaw season coming to a close, and not much to show for it, the Outlaws needed to put together a full 90 minute effort and salvage something on this rough season. Their opponent tonight, Orange County Bluestar, beat Ogden earlier in the season 4 - 0. It would be no small task to get a win against a good Bluestar side.

Things looked good for the Outlaws from the opening kickoff, applying lots of pressure early. In the 5th minute, Ogden nearly gets on the board from a header off a corner kick. That pressure would continue, and the Outlaws would be rewared in the 12th minute when Cavel Palmer was the recipient of a pass from Sunghyun Kim. After a mix up between a Bluestar defender and the goalkeeper, Palmer converted on an easy tap in.

First half was loaded with lots of action, each side getting chances, and the half would end with the Outlaws up 1 - 0.

Second half was equally exciting with Ogden getting behind the Bluestar defense on multiple occasions, but finishing was lacking. After one final push by Orange County, the final whistle blew with the Outlaws earning their second win of the season.

"The guys played great today," said Coach Hickman. "Great up top with Andy and Cavel, they were finding each other in the mid-field, and solid defending in the back anchored by Cardenas."

"We have another big one against Fresno. Hopefully we can come out tomorrow and pick up where we left off and get another win."

Ogden will host Fresno Fuego tomorrow night at 6:00 PM at Bonneville High. Come cheer on your Outlaws!

Sam Charles received USL accolades when he was listed as an honorable mention for "Team of the Week" for his three goal performance against Hollywood United.

Congratulations Sam!

BYU Outlasts Ogden

First off, I apologize for the late review of the match between BYU and the Outlaws. Sometimes real life gets in the way of our hobbies.

Anyway, Ogden hosted BYU on Wednesday night with hopes of gaining ground on the rest of the Southwest Division. It was apparent from the opening kickoff that the Outlaws were going to make this a game despite early miscues. Ogden was looking to attack more often, pressure the ball all over the pitch, and involve teammates in play.

The match was actually a pretty ugly one to watch. Neither side were particularly sharp and at times the game more closely resembled ping pong than a soccer match. Both coaches joked that the fans should receive a refund.

Despite the ugly play, each side had good chances to score. Outlaw 'keeper Jeff Rogers did well enough in the first half to deflect Cougars shots that were headed for net. Ogden had some threatening moments as well, often being joined in the attack by the outside backs, but that final pass wasn't there.

Ogden nearly found them without a goalkeeper when Jeff Rogers was kicked in the head as he made a sliding save. Play was stopped as he was patched up and he finished the game with a bandage wrapped around his head.

The second half was equally ugly as the first. Quality chances were even more rare until the 72nd minute. BYU was fouled just outside the box and Cougar Richie Bindrup lined up to take the kick. A well placed 5-man wall was not enough, and Bindrup curled the ball just inside the far post to five his side the 1-0 lead.

Ogden pushed forward into the attack, but could not score the equalizer. The game ended in a BYU win.

"I thought we played harder than we have," said coach Mike Hickman. "I thought, compared to the last time we played these guys, we went at them. I think we took it to 'em at times. Those are things we've got to do consistently to be good at the game."

"The guys feel better about their performance despite the result. If we can continue to improve and sharpen our passing and movement off the ball we can end our season with some wins."

Ogden will get back at it on Saturday, July 4th, when they travel to Provo to meet this same BYU side. Fans will be welcome to linger after the match and enjoy fireworks that will be a part of the 4th of July celebration at Lavell Edwards Stadium. Hopefully the Outlaws can provide their own version of fireworks on the field and come away with a much needed win.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM at South Field. Ticket can be purcharsed for $6 - adults and $5 - kids.
